OARS Philosophy of Care: Only the Best
What kind of medical care and nutrition do we provide animals at OARS?
If the kitten is tiny and unweaned ( < 6 weeks) we make every attempt possible to match the orphan
kittens with nursing momma's. Allowing kittens to have true kitty milk enables proper nutrition and the
development of a healthy immune system. Plus, the mama cat teaches the kittens important behaviors,
grooming and provides discipline. We encourage an adult mama cat for all of our unweaned kittens.
Once the kittens start to eat on their own we begin feeding quality kitten milk replacement
as a supplement as well as a blend of high-quality wet food to transition kittens. We then transition
the kittens from kitten milk replacement to Stage One Baby Kitten Food, a small piece of kitten kibble. This
formula is specially fortified with high-quality nutrient and vitamins including L-Lysine
that are essential for a developing kitten.
Around the age of 6-7 weeks we transition to feed a Stage Two Kitten Food, which is a slightly
larger piece of kitten kibble again fortified for a weaning and high growth kitten. We feed
this with a combination of high-quality wet food.
All of our cats and kittens receive two distemper vaccines, de-wormer, are tested for Feline Leukemia, FIV
and Heartworm. In addition, depending on the health of the animal at intake, additional care and medical attention
may be administered as needed. Our foster care homes are trained and knowledgeable about kitty care and monitor
each foster kitty to ensure their health and well-being.
